Sunflowers and Strobes

During one of my photo outings, I snapped this shot of a beautiful sunflower. I could have just walked up and took the picture with natural light, but then it would have been "just another flower picture". I didn't want just another pretty picture. I wanted a in-your-face flower power photo.

Here's what I did...

I used the Nikon D3s with a Nikon 24-70mm lens. I got as close as I could to go as wide as possible. I filled the foreground with the flower. I used a Nikon SB900 off camera in my left hand, which was synced by another on-camera SB900 flash. I held the flash at arms length and a bit high. This gave the flower some dimension with shadow. Using a flash also allowed me to dial down the background a bit darker while still having an optimal exposure on the flower. It took all of a couple of minutes from start to finish. It's that easy. So next time your shooting nature, bring your own sun and add a little extra pop of your own!
